A robust climbing plant that spreads easily. Requires a trellis or fence for support. The heart shaped leaves are very pretty with there red stems and the large bulbous root can be dug after at least 2 years. Fo-Ti is one of the most widely used tonic herbs in traditional Chinese medicine. The roots are used to restore blood, liver and kidneys. It is prescribed for conditions such as vertigo, insomnia, lumbago and constipation. Recent evidence shows it to be effective against high blood pressure and hardening of the veins and arteries. Famous in China as an Elixir of Life used as a tonic for longevity. Potentially invasive give it a wide berth and keep pruned. Drought tolerant and prefers full to partial sun. Hardy perennial to zone 7.
